Pay What You Want

Remember when Metallica sued Napster? They didn't see it at the time, but we all know now that it was already too late.

When I was a kid, banging around on pots and pans and harmonizing with the hum of the microwave, the dream was to be in a rock band, tour the world, sell a million records. That formula had been in use since the days of payola. Seemed like a good plan.

Once music was digital and copies could be made freely by 12-year-olds on the family PC, the majors squeezed what little juice they could still get, but the rest of us just accepted that music can't be sold the same way it was before.

And now we have streaming.

Since music is virtually free anyway, I'm just making it official.

All of my music online is now set to pay-what-you-want. Which basically means it's free unless someone really cool wants to send me some coffee money.

Which was kind of already the case.
